Be Kind is hand woven from cotton and VHS tapes. By using VHS tapes the piece evokes conversations of recording stories, time capsules, the sharing of information, memories, and things lost to time. The tapes woven in this piece are old episodes of the X-Files, a show that played with the notion of shrouded information and searching for a complete picture. The piece is densely woven inviting the viewer to navigate their way around the space and to find new and different vantage points. By changing how the stored information on the tapes is displayed and edited into obscurity, the viewer is left being surrounded by inaccessible information turned into object. Similar to how we hold old stories that no longer serve us, we return to the notion to “Be Kind and Rewind” and to step back to look at the larger picture.
